The Second Station shows Jesus taking up His cross, surrounded by Roman soldiers who impose the burden. The Stations of the Cross originated during the Crusades when pilgrims retraced Christ’s steps through Jerusalem. As travel became dangerous, faithful Christians reproduced these sacred journeys in Europe with outdoor markers. By the 18th century, Stations were placed inside churches, offering a spiritual pilgrimage through Christ’s Passion.
