Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and ordained a priest in 1969. From 1973 to 1979 he was Argentina’s Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus. He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was elevated to cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. He was elected to the papacy on February 28, 2013.
