In the Thirteenth Station, Jesus’ lifeless body is removed from the cross and placed in the arms of His sorrowful mother. The Stations of the Cross originated during the Crusades when pilgrims retraced Christ’s steps through Jerusalem. As travel became dangerous, faithful Christians reproduced these sacred journeys in Europe with outdoor markers. By the 18th century, Stations were placed inside churches, offering a spiritual pilgrimage through Christ’s Passion.
